Is Your Thyroid Under Attack?

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly shaped gland in the front of your neck. The hormones that the thyroid gland excretes control how energy is used in the body. When the thyroid is not functioning properly almost every organ in the body can be affected.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that frequently develops into an under active thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism. This is a result of the immune system attacking the thyroid gland and destruction of thyroid tissue occurs over time. As the disease progresses, the function of the gland declines which results in worsening hypothyroidism.

In Hashimoto’s, thyroid levels may be high or low in lab testing, which can make it difficult to diagnose properly.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis – Difficulty of Diagnosis

Hashimoto’s is often identified after symptoms have reached a severe and recognizable level. Patients suffering from Hashimoto’s are often misdiagnosed due to a lack of comprehensive thyroid testing.

What Are The Symptoms of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?

It is possible for patients with Hashimoto’s to be asymptomatic in the beginning. As the disease progresses, patients may experience fatigue, constipation, weight gain, mood changes, and brain fog. Hashimoto’s patients may experience temporary symptoms of hyperthyroidism when the tissue is under attack and thyroid hormones are released into the bloodstream rapidly during a flare. These symptoms may include anxiety, diarrhea, increased heart rate, and rapid weight loss.

Treatment of Hashimoto’s often involves thyroid hormone replacement therapy. The best patient outcomes are seen with the combined use of T4 and T3.
