What Is NAD IV Infusion Therapy?
To answer that, we have to start with the question, What are mitochondria?
Also known as the “powerhouse of the cell”, mitochondria are responsible for taking sugar (glucose) from foods we have eaten and producing the main source of energy, adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Think of mitochondria as the battery pack of the cell. Every function in the body requires energy from speaking, to smiling and simply breathing without conscious effort. Read more about Mitochondrial dysfunction.
Enzymes are large protein molecules that control how quickly a chemical reaction may occur. Digestive enzymes are an example which help to break down the foods we consume for better absorption into the body. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a coenzyme in the body and responsible for critical cell functions that include metabolism, maintenance and repair, and recycling also known as cellular autophagy.
Autophagy helps clean up damaged proteins in the mitochondria and prevent the energy loss of our “battery pack”. Fasting increases cellular autophagy. I wrote a blog article about the benefits of fasting. You should also check out the article I wrote about fasting and living longer.
NAD IV Therapy and Aging
As we age, NAD levels decline with progression of age related diseases such as arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, mental decline, immune dysfunction and cancer. It is possible to increase your own NAD production through lifestyle changes such as increasing consumption of whole plant based foods, exercise, intermittent fasting, ensuring consistent healthy sleep habits and mealtimes.
When lifestyle changes have been instituted and optimal health has not been obtained, it is reasonable to consider NAD supplementation. Oral supplementation of NAD is available although absorption is questionable and from my experience, I have not found this route to be beneficial personally. Intravenous NAD ensures 100% availability, compared to oral which is generally around 30%.
